So much of the feedback you get as a screenwriter is from a director or a producer or a development exec, and even when it’s useful, it’s always how they think the script or the film should be, and there’s always a power dynamic, even when it’s a close collaboration: you know that if you don’t agree with their notes you either will have to convince them of your point of view or the changes will get made anyway by someone else.

And so for me to be able to work with someone like Kerri, whose own writing I really respect and get and who I trust is coming at my work from the point of view of helping me get what I want out of the script, is absolutely invaluable. Sometimes I’ve needed a full set of notes on a draft, but sometimes too I’ve just sent her pages needing simply to know ‘does this work?’ and this is another great thing, to have someone you trust as a sounding board or with whom to share rough, not fully formed ideas. It’s a fragile time for a writer (or at least me) when the last thing you want to do is share what you’ve got with the people who are paying you (if you’ve got any kind of perfectionism in you) but when the right kind of feedback can be most useful to give you confirmation that you’re on the right track.
